Well, those are the 10 questions. Let’s go back and review and I’ll give you the answers and fun facts.

Debi Jenkins 3:10
Question one. What was the name of Daniel LaRusso’s karate instructor? And when Daniel asked him what kind of belt he had, what was his answer? Well, his name was Mr. Miyagi. When Daniel asked him what kind of belt he had, he answered Canvas, and said it was from JC Penney and was $3 and 98 cents. That’s not the kind of belt that Daniel was asking about but Mr. Miyagi always had the perfect answer for everything. The character Daniel Russo was played by actor Ralph Macchio. Here’s some fun facts. Pat Morita was not the first choice for the role of Mr. Miyagi. They were hesitant to cast him because he had a successful career as a stand up comedian. And this was a serious role. I think we can all say that we’re glad they changed their minds. For his role Pat Morita was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Pat Morita died in 2005 and Ralph Macchio spoke at his funeral service.

Question two. In the iconic Halloween scene, what does Daniel dress up as for his school’s Halloween dance? Well, Daniel told Mr. Miyagi that he wanted to be invisible and go is the Invisible Man. Mr. Miyagi came up with quite the solution, and made Daniel a pretty cool costume. Daniel dressed up as a shower and was surrounded by a red shower curtain with white polka dots. Nobody could see inside to see who it was. So he was invisible. Check out our Instagram page for a photo of the costume. Here’s some fun facts. While filming the fight after the Halloween dance, Ralph Macchio was actually injured when kicked in the face by actor William Zabka. I don’t think he was supposed to kick him that hard. Did you know that during the filming of Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio was 22 years old. He definitely looks young for his age. A lot of big time actors were considered for the role of Daniel but Ralph Macchio ended up getting the job. His role in the movie, The Outsiders showed what kind of work he could do on screen. And that was a great movie too. How’s this for life imitating art? Ralph Macchio named his real life son, Daniel.

Debi Jenkins 5:47
Question three. What was the name of the top student at the Cobra Kai dojo? Well, that students name was Johnny Lawrence. The actor that plays Johnny Laurence is Williams Zabka. Before Karate Kid William Zabka had no martial arts experience. But after the movie, he continued being trained in martial arts, and he now has a second degree Green Belt. People have taken Zabka’s because roll so seriously, that he said people have tried to start fights with him. I don’t think many people walked away from The Karate Kid movie cheering for Johnny. Ralph Macchio and Williams Zabka both co-produce the series Cobra Kai, which originally debuted on YouTube premium in 2018, but is now streaming on Netflix. They both reprise their Karate Kid roles in this series. The third season comes out in 2021 and I can’t wait.

Debi Jenkins 6:45
Question four. What is the name of Daniel’s girlfriend and for bonus points what actress played her? Well, Daniel’s girlfriend was Allie Mills, and she was portrayed by actress Elisabeth Shue. This was Elisabeth Shue’s film debut. She was actually attending Harvard University when she got the role. She temporarily left Harvard to be in this movie. She later returned and finished her degree. Elisabeth Shue got her start acting in television commercials.

Debi Jenkins 7:17
Question five. At the beginning of the movie, who invites Daniel to a party at the beach? That person is Freddy Fernandez, a boy that lives in the same apartment complex. You may remember when Daniel moved in, Freddy helped him up the stairs with his bike and a couple other items. The name of the apartment complex that Daniel and his mom moved into what’s called South Seas and it was located in Reseda, California. Surprisingly, it looks exactly the same today. Hopefully they fixed that swimming pool though.

Debi Jenkins 7:56
Question six. What color is the car that Mr. Miyagi gives Daniel for his 16th birthday? Well, we all probably remember that the car is yellow. It’s actually a 1948 Ford Super Deluxe convertible. Daniel had to do a lot of wax on and wax off to get that car looking so good. After the movie, Ralph Macchio asked if he could buy the car, but he never got an answer. On the day that Karate Kid 2 was released, he went outside of his house and guess what was sitting there in the driveway? The movie studio gave him the car as a gift. It can even be seen in season two of the Cobra Kai series. And speaking of gifts, the other gift that Mr. Miyagi gave Daniel for his 16th birthday was a karate gi to wear in the tournament.

Debi Jenkins 8:54
Question seven. At The All Valley Karate Tournament, what unethical move does Johnny’s sensei instruct him to use on Daniel, a move that Johnny was hesitant to use? Well, it was a sweep to Daniel’s injured leg. Here’s some fun facts. Over 500 extras were used to film The All Valley Karate Tournament scene. The Cobra Kai students wore black karate uniforms. They each have a yellow patch on their front that is of a fist and above the fist is their name.

Debi Jenkins 9:32
Question eight. After winning The All Valley Karate Tournament, who gives Daniel the trophy? Well, surprisingly, it was Johnny Lawrence. When he hands Daniel the trophy. He says you’re all right, LaRusso. That was one moment where maybe you had a tender spot in your heart for Johnny. Did you know that there was a DC Comics character named Karate Kid? He first appeared in 1966. Columbia Pictures had permission from DC Comics to use the name Karate Kid for the movie. The comic book character and the movie character are not the same. The only thing the film used was the name. Not only does Ralph macho own the yellow car from the movie, he owns that trophy too.

Debi Jenkins 10:18
Question nine. Not knowing his mother is watching, what item does Daniel throw in a dumpster and say he hates? That was his bicycle. The brand of the bicycle that Daniel had was a Mongoose. I wonder how many kids back in the 80s wanted one of those bikes after the movie? In the movie Mr. Miyagi surprises Daniel by fixing his bike.

Debi Jenkins 10:45
And question 10. At the Cobra Kai dojo, sensei John Kreese reminds the students they study The Way of the Fist. What is The Way of the Fist, a phrase the students repeat? Well, the answer is, strike first, strike hard, no mercy. The sensei of Cobra Kai was John Kreese and he was played by actor Martin Kove. Here’s some fun facts. While the characters just despised each other in the movie, Martin Kove, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are actually friends in real life. And they all reprise their roles in the Cobra Kai series. You’ll find William Zabka and Ralph Macchio in all of the seasons and Martin Cove mainly appears in season two and on.
