Just add this to the #2020 list. One of October’s greatest TV traditions is going away…kind of. Ever since 1966 when It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown first aired on network television, you could count on seeing it every year on CBS until ABC bought the rights in 2001. There was just something special about watching it that one night it aired on TV each year.
Well it looks like someone has sold out. This is the first year that you will only be able to watch It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown on a streaming device. (Of course you can watch it on VHS or DVD but that’s not the same) In 2020, this beloved classic will only air on Apple TV+. Is this some marketing ploy to get more Apple TV subscribers? Probably. We’ve all fallen for those tactics before. Who hasn’t signed up for a free trial of a streaming app just to watch some special anticipated show?
Many fans are disappointed mostly because it’s a matter of principle. When traditions are frequently going by the wayside, little 25 minute pieces of enjoyment like this TV special mean more than most would think. Sure, how hard is it to get a free subscription to Apple TV and watch it that way? Well, not everyone has access to streaming devices so that cuts out a portion of the population.
With all that’s going on in the world, it seems like a mundane thing to complain about. But many, including myself just want a little piece of history to cling to. Can some things just stay the same?
